Our Mission Statementby Father Thomas Dowd
Using the Internet to empower people to live their baptismal call
To receive baptism is about far more than a mere ceremony. Through baptism God promises to share with us the indwelling of his Holy Spirit.
This Holy Spirit, present within the baptized, places in our hearts the capacity and call to journey inward, seeking a true and profound relationship with God. The Holy Spirit also calls us outward, binding us into one People of those who have received the same gift, and prompting us to place ourselves at the service of others.
Adventus.org exists to help people discover and live the full meaning of the baptismal call. We exist to help people grow in a loving personal relationship with God, and to in turn help them to grow in service to their neighbour through the use of their gifts and talents.
A call to a relationship with God
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. (1 John 3: 1)
Human beings are spiritual beings. We were created with a deep desire in our hearts for God. Baptism is the sacrament that consecrates that desire, putting us in a direct relationship with God as adopted sons and daughters.
Adventus.org exists to help people discover that call to a relationship with God. It exists to help people respond to that call in baptism, whether by helping people come to the sacrament of baptism itself, or by helping people to rediscover their baptism by helping them to renew their relationship with God.
A call to hope
I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (Romans 8: 18)
There is no question that evil exists in this world. Many people lose hope, wondering where God can be found in the face of suffering. But by his suffering and death Jesus has redeemed suffering itself, and in his resurrection and final coming in glory Jesus has conquered all evil once and for all.
Adventus.org exists to help people live this victory. Through baptism we share in the death of Christ, so as to then share in this hope. Through education, community organization and prophetic witness, Adventus.org helps people become agents of hope for our world, equipping them for the struggles which may lie ahead.
A call to holiness
You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5: 48)
Those who believe in Jesus as Lord are called his “disciples” because they accept a new discipline of living, one designed to lead to excellence of life. In spiritual terms, this excellence of life is called “holiness”. It is achieved one step at a time, by building up our virtues and struggling against our vices, as we continue to work at growing our love relationship with God and with our neighbour.
Adventus.org exists to help people discover and hone the virtues necessary to grow in holiness. Just as an expert musician is called a “virtuoso”, through raw talent honed to perfection by practice, a Christian is called to hone the raw talent given to him in baptism so as to become a “virtuoso of life”.
A call to community
For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (1 Corinthians 12: 12; 27)
All baptized people share a common characteristic, in that they have all been touched by the Holy Spirit. Just as sharing in common blood is part of the basis of being a family, this sharing in the Spirit is the start of a profound unity among Christians, a unity which then remains to be built.
Adventus.org exists to help people grow into unity with one another. Using the tools the Internet provides, we will work to build community through communication. We will help people and peoples to get to know one another, so as to share one another’s joys and sorrows. We will help people see the human face of the other, so that we may discover even more the image of God present in each other.
A call to service
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6: 2)
To be baptized means to be joined to the People of God, whose head is Christ. This assembly is not merely a grouping of individuals: each person makes his or her own unique contribution for the sake of the good of the whole. Just as Jesus came to serve and not to be served, all Christians are called to live this call of service to their neighbour.
Adventus.org exists to help people live this call of service. Many people are willing to put their gifts to good use for the sake of the Kingdom, but they do not know how. Adventus.org will use the Internet to provide opportunities for people to live their gifts for God’s greater glory.
